Genesis 1:27
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; Male and female he created them."
The Latin words Imago Dei are just plain beautiful. Let them slip off your tongue as you say the phrase. It means "in the image of God." These two words tell us who we were created to be. Furthermore, it expresses the value of every human life created. Why just look at any end of the world destruction series or movie. The Walking Dead, I am Legend, and The Day After Tomorrow all have us looking for what is important in life, togetherness with one and other.
In the Bible, Noah tells the story of creation as he and his family is tossed by massive waves in the Ark. He speaks of Adam and Eve and portrays the temptation and fall of the first human beings. Because of this fall, the image of God in mankind has suffered a bit distortion. But, something of this intense image still remains in us today.
When we open our hearts to God we begin the process of this transformation. With this quest, he begins to change us from the inside out. His ultimate goal is to restore his image in us as in the beginning.
This is who we are. We are his direct image of what he wants others to see in this world. This is who every person you encounter today is, too. When you look into someone's face that God brings to your path today you are seeing an individual who was created in his image. Yes, this can be a bit humbling. For there are always others out there that make us question our own sanity. And for that matter, I'm sure we have them question their own with our actions. Nonetheless, it gives dignity and value to every human being. This valued truth should change the way you see yourself and with others. When you see God in everyone, you feel the connection to one another through Him.
Dear Father,
Thank you for creating me
in your image so that I can know you.
Help me to remember that every person I meet
is infinitely valuable to you.
Help me to treat them with your love. Amen.
