Acts 1:8
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
I am a bit of a NASCAR buff. No, it wasn't always like that, but it is amazing what our children can get us interested in when they take an extreme interest in a sport or activity. These little people God blesses us with allow us to live our lives again through the eyes of someone dear to us. My son caught the fever when he was just two years old. He would sit in front of that TV and watch those cars go around for hours. It was not soon after that we just had to get him to his first race.
We are fortunate to live near Daytona International Speedway. There is no short supply of stock cars available there. I'll never forget the exhilaration of being present at our first race. Television cameras could not adequately capture the thunder of those 800 horsepower engines. I, too, was enthralled when I heard them come to life with those famous words, "Gentleman, start your engines!" There was a sheer force engulfing us drawing me in to all that energy that surrounded us.
There are many references to power in the Bible. In today's verse, Jesus makes a promise that he will send the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit will infuse the disciples with power. That power Jesus promises is not like the power infused in those engines, although it can feel as powerful as that. It is the power given to all of us so that we can each be what God intends us to be.
Stockcars need one critical component, gas. Without gas, no engine can roar to life. It simply will not run. The same is true in our spiritual lives. We need to be filled with the right kind of "gas" to experience God's essential power in our lives each day. For most, that means we must find spiritual time each day to refuel our tanks. By reading the Bible and participating in prayer we ensure our spiritual gas tanks are always full. That said, when our tanks are empty we lose that power.
God wants you to have that kind of power always. He doesn't want you feeling like you've lost touch in life. He wants you to be full of love and kindness. He has plans for your life and offers that discovery through the Holy Spirit. Ask God to send the Holy Spirit to you now to enlighten your thoughts.
Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for that power that guides us.
Empower my life today. Send me your Spirit. Amen.
