John 3:16
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son.”
How's your new year beginning? I've been getting some mixed emotions when readers write me. Some say there is much to be thankful for. Others say they are off to a rocky start. No matter how your year unfolds, remember the tracks that are being laid each day can change route.
If you are in the mode thinking, "What's in it for me?" Than you may be blatantly and unashamedly living for yourself. You're not interested in other people at this time. In fact things may be so disheveled that you aren't taking time to notice others in need. You may be only focusing on what is going wrong in your life, and how you can keep up fixing what keeps breaking. Ironically, this same attitude condemns you to living in a shallow, unrewarding life.
God is a giver, and although it might not seem like it now, he wants you to keep your eyes open and be a giver, too, not a taker. Take your focus off everything that is bombarding you lately. Quit trying to figure out what is happening in your life and figure out what you can do for others. We are not made to function as self-involved people, thinking only of ourselves. No, God created us to be givers. And you will never be truly fulfilled as a human being until you learn the simple secret of how to give you life away.
I know this is not the best time to mention this, but it is extremely selfish to be dwelling on your own problems. I know there may be a bit you want or need at the moment, especially if you are being bestowed a bit of bad luck. Believe it or not, one of the best things you can do is to help solve some else's problem. If you want a bit of good luck now, try making a bit of luck in someone else's life. Start sowing some seeds so that God can bring you a harvest.
We were created to give, not simply to make sure our lives are content. If you miss that truth, you will miss the abundant, overflowing, joy-filled life that God has in store for you. When you reach out to other's in need God will make sure that your own needs are supplied. He will fix those leaky areas you are experiencing right now.
You may be thinking, "This year is off to a terrible start! What can I give someone else when everything is coming down around me?" You can give a smile. You can give a hug. You can do something menial that will be meaningful for someone else. You could mow someone's lawn. Make a phone call. Take someone to the store. You can write a letter of thanks to someone you've been putting off. You can send a card of encouragement or sympathy to someone who needs it desperately.
Take off the blinders! Stop worrying about yourself. Focus on all those around you this week. Bring that glory back!
Prayer
Father, please help me to get my eyes off myself at this moment. Help me to see others in need around me. May I learn to be of help to others this New Year by offering comfort and encouragement.
