Psalm 23:1-5
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul."
The twenty-third psalm has to be my ultimate favorite verse. I remember as child, when my father died, I reverted to it often. It was mentioned in my second grade class numerous times and class projects were based on this unconditional love. It is no wonder, that during the most tumultuous time of my life, at age eight, I reflected on this often- especially alone at night trying to restlessly sleep.
Speaking this verse, I'd picture myself in soothing green pastures with grass as high has my waist delightfully strolling with Jesus by my side. We'd gaze in awe as fields of Clasping Clone, Baby Blue Eyes, Celandine, and Corn Flowers erupted in bright hues around us. We'd walk hand in hand as he guided me past another breathtakingly beautiful oasis that evolved around each bend. With each trek, my mind would soothe as I'd realize all this beauty was created just for me. I knew he was here in the depths of my mind whenever I reached out for him.
Other times I'd be atop cascading mountains, embraced by a porch swing, in front of a weather-worn hewn cabin overlooking the Smoky Mountains. Here we'd swing together his arms offering comfort until my breath steadied and I was at peace again. We'd speak few words allowing the glory of unadorned mountain tops refresh my soul.
Throughout my life, the Lord has been my Shepherd. He has provided for me and my life has been blessed. Oh, my life has not been without challenges and difficulties. But when danger threatened, God has always protected me. When I experienced loss, God has comforted me. I've felt his love and protection my entire life. My faith ensures that when I am unable to tend to my needs any longer, I hand them all over to God. His hand is always with me, loving me, guiding me, and taking care of me.
Pray
Heavenly Father, thank you for being my Shepherd. Thank you for providing for my every need. With your guidance and protection I feel secure and fulfilled. Shepherd me today and every day. If I ever get lost, please come and find me and lead me home to you again. Amen.
