Genesis 50:20
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."
As you look back on 2013, a thought may occur - life is not fair. There are times we are just sitting there minding our own business and out of nowhere, WHAM! We are hit with an event that makes us reconvene and reanalyze our lives. There is not one of us out there who is exempt from bad occurrences.
Jesus warned his disciples that in this world there would be trouble (John 16:33). Just because you have a relationship with God does not mean all your troubles are eliminated. A relationship with God gives us hope and a peaceful perspective in the midst of whatever havoc we are encountering.
The Bible verse is the story of Jacob, grandson of Isaac, and great-grandson of Abraham. His life was marred with repeated instances of unfairness. His brothers beat him and were so jealous of him that they sold him into slavery in Egypt. To make matters worse, he was falsely accused of sexual assault by his boss's wife and then thrown in prison. His fellow inmates made promises to help him, but they were lost and he spent a longer stay in jail. But, God was at work in all this.
As God's hand intervened, Joseph slowly moved up the ranks through Pharaoh’s
servants. He ultimately became the most powerful man in Egypt, next to Pharaoh
himself. God's plan was to take the unfairness that the fallen world had
dished out to him and use it for bigger purposes.
When payback time finally came to his brothers, Jacob took the unbeaten path. He had seen God's work in his own life. He knew no matter how terrible his situation had been over the years God had huge plans for him. He was able to say to his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good."
God is at work in your life today and throughout this New Year. No matter your circumstance today or what's to come, trust that God will guide you. Have faith.
Father, help me to trust you today and every day in 2014.
When I am treated unfairly or life feels unmanageable, help me
to remember that you are at work and I can always trust you. Amen
