Judges 13:17-18
"Then Manoah inquired of the angel of the Lord, "What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes true?" He replied, "Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding."
Today's verse explains one of the many incidents where God sends a message to be delivered to his people by an angel. The word angel actually means "messenger." This particular occurrence took place when Manoah and his wife were going to have a son. His name was Samson, and he is a major player in Biblical history.
During the conversation Samson's father asked the angel his name. The angel of the Lord told him it is beyond Manoah's ability to comprehend. The sheer fact is, he explained, we don't know everything about God.
What we do know
God is the creator. He is the one who causes everything that exists to exist.
God is sovereign. He is in control at all times
God is eternal. He has always been and will always be.
No matter how infinite our wisdom becomes from daily Biblical studies, the Bible periodically reminds us that God is bigger than our ability to completely understand him. In our realm of faith, there is always a degree of mystery. That said, we live by faith, not sight. God is bigger than our own personal comprehension, a lot larger than we can ever imagine. Realize today that we know only a tiny fraction of who he really is. Take heart in marveling in this mystery knowing he has everything under control.
Father you have made yourself known to me.
You have told me you love us so much that
you send your son. Remind me to marvel
in this mystery you set before me and always
know you are in the driver's seat. Amen.
